In a recent Q&A, Mark Gurman disclosed an intriguing tidbit about iOS 19 – its internal codename, which seems to hint at what we might anticipate…
The codename is Solarium, and it didn’t take long for people online to latch onto this as a purported indication of the next design aesthetics.
Merriam-Webster defines “solarium” as “a glass-enclosed porch or room.” When paired with Apple’s frosted glass WWDC 2025 imagery and mentions of a UI inspired by Vision Pro, it presents yet another seemingly obvious clue about the upcoming features.
However, as Macworld observes, Apple’s prior codenames have typically not signified anything special.
Historically, Apple’s codenames have little correlation to the final product. For instance, last year’s iOS 18 was codenamed Crystal, while iOS 17 went by Dawn. iOS 12? Peace […]
The last significant alteration to iOS’s interface came with iOS 7. The codename for that release? Innsbruck, a resort city in Austria renowned for its ski slopes. In the past, Apple enjoyed naming its iOS versions after winter vacation spots.
Michael Simon of the site argues that Solarium, similar to Innsbruck, “almost certainly” holds no particular significance. I would assert that a company as secretive as Apple, which has a history of codenames leaking, certainly won’t embed hints in them.
WWDC visuals could be seen as somewhat different. By the time they’re revealed, several leaks have likely surfaced, allowing Apple to have a bit of fun with them. However, codenames – established at the initial stages of a project – are unlikely to disclose any secrets.
