The ‘New Era’ for Siri Promises to Be More Chaotic Than Anticipated

Apple claims we are entering ‘a new era’ for Siri with the advent of Apple Intelligence. Is this accurate? To some extent, yes. However, the reality is more complex than you might think, and it is becoming even more so with the latest reports from Mark Gurman.

Apple’s controversial iOS 18.1 update

When iOS 18.1 was released last month, Apple made a noteworthy choice.

It introduced a fresh look for Siri, featuring Apple Intelligence, yet the actual functionalities have hardly changed.

The ‘new’ Siri presents a stunning glowing interface, giving it an AI-like appeal.

However, the AI capabilities are still developing.

In iOS 18.1 (available on devices compatible with Apple Intelligence), Siri has acquired:

  • enhanced knowledge about Apple products
  • better understanding of speech disfluencies
  • superior context retention across multiple queries

You can also communicate with Siri by typing, activated by double-tapping the display’s bottom.

Is this the beginning of a new era? Perhaps, but it’s only the start. This leaves users perplexed.

What’s in store for Siri in iOS 18.2 and future versions

Next month, iOS 18.2 will introduce a highly anticipated feature: integration with ChatGPT.

This enhancement will allow Siri to redirect specific requests it cannot fulfill to ChatGPT, greatly increasing its utility.

Additionally, in iOS 18.2, users will be able to send any inquiry to ChatGPT directly by starting their request with, “Ask ChatGPT.”

Moreover, iOS 18.4, expected in the spring, is likely to bring three more significant upgrades to Siri:

  • personal context awareness for improved assistance based on user data
  • numerous new in-app actions for both Apple and third-party applications
  • awareness of on-screen content at any given moment

Lastly, Mark Gurman reported recently that a new ‘LLM Siri’ will be introduced in a version of iOS 19 and macOS 16. It may be demonstrated in June at WWDC, but its release on devices is expected in spring 2026 via a software update.

When Apple declared that its AI features would be rolled out incrementally throughout the coming year, there was criticism; however, I maintain a more positive perspective. The ongoing enhancement of Apple Intelligence has several advantages.

That said, regarding Siri specifically, criticism may be well-founded.

The challenge of Siri’s gradual rollout

At present, Siri in iOS 18.1 appears completely revamped (for AI-compatible iPhones). Yet, in terms of functionality, it has scarcely evolved.

This presents a challenge since Siri’s effectiveness hinges on user trust. Do you have confidence in its ability to execute your requests?

Many users have previously asked Siri questions, only to meet disappointment, leading them to abandon the assistant altogether.

This cycle is poised to repeat with Siri’s ‘new era.’

Apple’s decision to roll out a slew of small modifications instead of one comprehensive ‘new Siri’ makes it difficult for users to appreciate the assistant’s enhancements.

Siri must work to regain user confidence. This will require gradual developments that many users may struggle to recognize.

While it is possible that Apple’s strategy will succeed, I remain skeptical.

One thing is certain: there will be a tangled period ahead for Siri and its users.
