During the weekend, we received numerous updates regarding upcoming Vision products. Although some of the information pointed towards delays, the most encouraging news was confirmation that a new Vision Pro featuring the M5 chip is anticipated for release in 2025. However, the more I ponder this, the more ambivalent I feel. Here’s my reasoning.
The existence of a new model may discourage current buyers
Apple finds itself in a unique predicament with the impending M5 Vision Pro.
Previously, I argued that this is precisely the right direction for the next iteration of the device. While I desire a lighter, redesigned version, that may still be years away, keeping the existing Vision Pro equipped with the latest Apple silicon is undoubtedly a positive step.
However, the introduction of a new M5 model also brings about challenges.
Firstly, it could deter potential buyers of the current model.
If you’ve been considering the Vision Pro, maybe you were thinking about indulging yourself this holiday season by splurging on $3,500 worth of Apple’s cutting-edge technology.
This marks the first holiday season for the Vision Pro’s availability.
However, with an M5 model looming, how eager are you to invest in the current M2 version?
Apple has already launched new iPad Pros and Macs equipped with the M4 chip series. Additionally, Apple Intelligence is now available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Despite the Vision Pro’s advanced technology, spending $3,500 on an M2 model, which may not include future support for Apple Intelligence, should give you pause.
Especially since if the M5 Vision Pro is released next year, you wouldn’t want to feel shortchanged.
The issue of buyer’s remorse
This brings us to the second complication regarding the new model—the potential for buyer’s remorse among Vision Pro early adopters.
If the existing Vision Pro receives full support for Apple Intelligence and can perform similarly to its M5 successor, this might not pose a significant issue.
But what if, as some reports suggest, the current Vision Pro has already fully utilized the M2 chip’s capabilities?
Purchasing a Vision Pro for $3,500 is already a significant decision. However, pressuring owners to upgrade in just 12-18 months to access the latest features would be particularly challenging.
The M5 model is essential for the growth of Vision Pro, despite its challenges
Ultimately, while the introduction of the M5 Vision Pro poses a dilemma, I recognize that the situation would be worse without it.
The Vision Pro represents a new platform, and going years without updates is simply not feasible, especially given the capacity of Apple’s silicon team to deliver substantial upgrades annually.
When the new Vision Pro is launched, hopefully, Apple will provide attractive trade-in offers for the original Vision Pro, helping to mitigate the struggles of early adopters.
An M5 Vision Pro is inevitable if Apple aims to continue expanding the platform. Let’s hope Apple manages to lessen any negative impact its introduction may cause.
