As reported by Bloomberg, Apple is developing a second generation of its widely popular and budget-friendly tracker, the AirTag, which first launched in 2021. Here’s what we anticipate Apple will present with AirTag 2 later in the year.
Enhancements
According to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, AirTag 2 has moved forward in its manufacturing tests, with three significant upgrades expected:
- Extended range
- Enhanced wireless chip
- Greater emphasis on privacy
The next-generation AirTag is rumored to feature a new ultra-wideband chip that could provide up to three times the range for precision tracking. This improvement means you’ll be able to locate your AirTags from distances of 30-90 meters, compared to just 10-30 meters with the existing version. The new wireless chip may also enhance location accuracy in areas with lower population density.
Historically, AirTags have been misused for stalking, with some users even modifying them to disable the built-in speaker, making it more difficult for targeted individuals to detect a nearby AirTag. Enhancements to the anti-stalking capabilities would ideally assist affected users in finding these trackers more effectively.
Expected Release Date
AirTag 2 is anticipated to launch in mid-2025, according to Bloomberg:
Apple is developing a new AirTag — code-named B589 — with a release planned for around the middle of next year.
In the meantime, if you’re thinking of purchasing the current generation of AirTags, they are currently available at a discount, with a single AirTag priced at $23 and a 4-pack offered for $69.99. When you buy the 4-pack, that brings the price down to approximately $18 per AirTag!
