These Two Apple Products Make Great Gifts, While Two Others Miss Out on Holiday Sales

The festive season is here, and Apple wants you to believe that its devices are the ideal gifts for your family and friends. However, a recent report from CIRP indicates which Apple products are frequently gifted and which ones do not experience a holiday surge.

Apple Watch and iPad are popular holiday gifts

CIRP conducted a survey of Apple product owners over the year to determine how many of them received their devices as gifts.

This allowed them to identify which Apple products significantly benefit from increased gifting during the holidays and which do not.

It’s essential to note that CIRP focused exclusively on primary Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, leaving out accessories like AirPods—which undoubtedly see a lot of holiday demand—from the study.

Despite this, two gadgets stood out as favorites among gift-givers.

  • The Apple Watch was gifted to 9% of participants in the holiday quarter, a significant increase from just 2% during the rest of the year.
  • The iPad saw a similar trend, with 6% receiving it as a gift over the holidays, compared to its usual 2% rate.

iPhone and Mac are seldom given as gifts

What about the iPhone, Apple’s flagship product?

It appears that iPhones are rarely given as gifts, whether during the holiday season or throughout the year.

Almost 0% of respondents indicated they received an iPhone as a gift, and this figure remained consistent all year long.

This isn’t particularly surprising. Purchasing a new iPhone can be pricey, often requiring someone to take on monthly payments. It’s akin to ‘buying’ a car for someone and then leaving them with the monthly financial responsibility.

Similarly, the Mac didn’t perform well as a holiday present—only around 1% of respondents reported receiving a Mac as a gift during the holiday period, which is only a slight uptick from other times of the year.

Interpreting this data, we can observe that Apple’s more affordable products, like the Apple Watch and iPad, are more likely to be popular gifts, whereas the costlier items, such as the iPhone and Mac, are not.

Whether you’re in the market for gifts or creating a wish list, this report could help steer your shopping choices or assist you in rationalizing the decision not to purchase a new iPhone for a loved one.
