Previously, we received two reports detailing anticipated changes to the materials Apple is supposedly planning for the iPhone 17—specifically regarding the frame and the back.

Transition from titanium to aluminum frame

A report from late last year hinted at Apple replacing the titanium frame found in the Pro models with aluminum, similar to what is used in the standard models.

In addition to this change, other iPhone models will also see significant redesigns in the coming year. For example, all models will shift to aluminum frames from stainless steel and titanium, according to one source.

Nonetheless, we noted that this might not align with The Information‘s interpretation.

The first point worth mentioning is the potentially vague phrasing utilized. The Information stated that the “frame” would be aluminum, but in Apple’s terminology, it already is. Apple describes the “band” (the casing surrounding the display) as titanium while referring to the internal aluminum structure as the “frame” or “substructure.”

Introduction of a part-aluminum, part-glass back

The rear of current iPhones is constructed from glass to facilitate wireless charging. The same report mentioned a change, with Apple opting for aluminum for a larger camera module at the top, complemented by glass beneath.

The Pro and Pro Max models will showcase a new design featuring both aluminum and glass. The upper section will feature a larger rectangular camera bump made of aluminum instead of the traditional 3D glass, while the lower half remains glass to allow for wireless charging, according to two sources.

Enhanced transition between sides and rear

A recent report has revealed that Apple intends to adopt a new method to connect the rear of the casing to the sides, resulting in a smoother transition. Claims were made by the Weibo leaker Fixed-focus digital.

Details regarding the splicing materials of the iPhone series have previously been disclosed… The crucial point is that the connection zone between the body’s Deco and the back shell will feature a slope instead of a step.

While automated translations from Chinese may be somewhat awkward, it seems the post refers to a more seamless connection. Although the current junction is not particularly visually intrusive, this potential modification could make the new models more comfortable to hold.
