According to Bloomberg, Apple is currently developing a second-generation model of its widely used and budget-friendly item tracker, the AirTag, which originally launched in 2021. Here’s what we anticipate Apple will offer with AirTag 2.
Enhancements
In a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it was noted that AirTag 2 has successfully moved forward in manufacturing tests, indicating three significant enhancements to look forward to:
- Extended range
- Advanced wireless chip
- Greater emphasis on privacy
Apple is reportedly set to incorporate a new ultrawideband chip in the next iteration of the AirTag, potentially increasing the range for precision finding to as much as threefold. This upgrade would allow you to track your AirTags from distances of 30-90 meters, compared to the current 10-30 meter range. A more advanced wireless chip may also enhance location accuracy in less densely populated areas.
In the past, incidents of AirTags being misused for stalking have been reported, and some individuals have even altered AirTags to disable the integrated speaker, complicating Apple’s efforts to alert potential targets of a nearby AirTag. Improvements in anti-stalking measures are expected to help those targeted more easily identify nearby AirTags.
Launch Timeline
AirTag 2 is anticipated to be available by mid-2025, as reported by Bloomberg:
Apple is working on a new AirTag — code-named B589 — for launch around the middle of next year.
In the meantime, if you’re looking to purchase the current AirTag model, they are currently available at a discounted price: a single AirTag is priced at $24, while a 4-pack is going for $69.99, making it roughly $18 per AirTag with the bundle!
