Just when you thought tariff updates couldn’t get any more perplexing, the situation has taken another unexpected turn. The Trump administration has indicated that the current exemption from the steep 125% reciprocal tariff is only a temporary measure, with tariffs on items like smartphones and laptops expected to kick in within “a month or two.”
On Friday evening, US Customs and Border Protection released a list of exclusions pertaining to Trump’s new 125% reciprocal tariff on China, in addition to the 10% baseline global tariff. Among these exclusions are “smartphones, laptop computers, hard drives, and computer processors and memory chips.”
It’s important to highlight that Apple would still be liable for a 20% “fentanyl tariff,” which President Trump noted in a recent Truth Social post. In summary, the total tariff for China would have amounted to 145% (comprising the 125% reciprocal tariff plus the 20% fentanyl tariff), but it has now been reduced to just 20%.
However, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick clarified that the exemption from the reciprocal tariff isn’t designed to be a long-term solution. In an interview with ABC News, he stated that the tech industry would face a “special focus type of tariff” (as reported by The Verge).
Lutnick underscored that this “special focus type of tariff” would encompass products such as the iPhone. Trump echoed similar thoughts on Truth Social, mentioning that the administration would be “taking a look at” semiconductors and the entire “electronics supply chain” in an upcoming tariff evaluation.
Thus, the key takeaway at this point is that a specific tech tariff will be established at a later date, ideally at a rate lower than the 125% “reciprocal tariff.” We can expect more clarity in a month or two.
In practical terms, any tariffs imposed on China will likely push Apple to relocate as many US imports as feasible to India and Vietnam. Recent Mac models, such as the M4 MacBook Air and M3 Ultra Mac Studio, have been produced in Vietnam. Nevertheless, there is still uncertainty regarding the production capacity outside of China; not all Apple products sold in the US can be feasibly manufactured elsewhere.
While we hope for a favorable outcome, it’s wise not to wait. If you’re in need of a new Apple product, now would be the time to purchase. According to Trump, no one will escape the looming tariffs.
