Trump Implements 90-Day Tariff Hold for Most Goods, Increases China’s Tariffs to 125%

Today marked the implementation of significant tariffs on most U.S. imports, but the repercussions may be temporary for many. President Trump has initiated a 90-day suspension of the harshest tariffs, exempting China from this relief. Consequently, while the risk to Apple might be alleviated somewhat, the company is still not entirely safe.

China faces increased tariffs, while most nations benefit from a pause

Trump shared the following statement on Truth Social:

Due to China’s persistent disrespect towards global markets, I am raising the tariffs imposed on China by the United States to 125%, effective immediately. It is my hope that China will soon recognize that exploiting the U.S.A. and other countries is no longer viable or permissible. Meanwhile, I have noted that over 75 nations have reached out to U.S. representatives—including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and USTR—to discuss solutions regarding trade, trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs. These nations have not retaliated against the United States as I strongly advised, thus I am implementing a 90-day PAUSE and a significant reduction of the Reciprocal Tariff to 10% during this period, effective immediately. Thank you for your attention!

While many companies are surely relieved by the tariff suspension, Apple is likely not among them.

The firm’s reliance on China as a key player in its supply chain is well-documented. Although the company has made strides to produce more goods in locations such as India and Vietnam, the majority of Apple’s manufacturing still takes place in China.

This dependence makes Apple more susceptible than others to the ramifications of a heightened trade conflict between the U.S. and China.

However, as with all matters concerning tariffs, significant uncertainty remains. We can expect to hear more updates in the near future.

We will keep you informed on any developments related to Apple moving forward.
