tvOS 18.2 Introduces Support for Additional Aspect Ratios on Apple TV

During the WWDC in June, Apple unveiled tvOS 18, hinting at several exciting features that were set to arrive later. Among these features is the capability to adjust different aspect ratios on the Apple TV, making its debut with the tvOS 18.2 update.

Apple TV to support various aspect ratios

The most recent beta version of tvOS 18.2, which became available to developers on Monday, introduces the ability to modify the Apple TV’s aspect ratio. While Apple primarily announced the inclusion of the 21:9 aspect ratio, several additional options will also be integrated. Users will have the option to select from the following:

  • Automatic
  • 16:9
  • 21:9
  • 2.37:1
  • 2.39:1
  • 2.40:1
  • DCI 4K
  • 32:9

While most contemporary TVs feature a 16:9 aspect ratio, offering various aspect ratio settings is essential for users connecting their Apple TV to projectors. Now, these users can select an aspect ratio that best fits their projector screen.

This new feature can be accessed within the Audio and Video settings on the Apple TV.

A standout feature in tvOS 18 is undoubtedly InSight, which delivers information about actors, characters, and even songs featured in Apple TV+ films or series. A simple tap on the Apple TV app reveals in-depth details about the current scene.

The update also enhances the Enhance Dialogue functionality and automatically activates subtitles when the Mute button is pressed. Moreover, tvOS 18 introduces a revamped Fitness+ app and enables users to designate a specific iPhone as a dedicated camera for FaceTime and similar applications.

Apple has stated that tvOS 18 will also introduce new screensavers featuring scenes from Apple TV+ programming, although these are not yet available in the latest beta version.

The tvOS 18.2 beta is now accessible for developers, with a public release set for December. The update is compatible with Apple TV models from 2015 onward.
