UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has condemned a recent threat made by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, against British journalists. Medvedev suggested filling the Christmas stockings of editors at The Times with polonium, a radioactive substance infamously used in the assassination of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.

Upholding Press Freedom

Lammy emphasized the importance of press freedom and democracy, praising British newspapers for their independent thinking. He stated that such threats are unacceptable and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to protecting journalists and upholding the principles of free speech.

Medvedev’s comments have been widely criticized as dangerous and irresponsible, especially given the historical context of polonium being used in targeted assassinations. The threat has raised concerns about the safety of journalists and the escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations.

The UK government has reiterated its stance against any form of intimidation towards the press and is expected to address the issue through diplomatic channels.
