The gradual introduction of digital driver’s licenses in the United States through Apple Wallet continues to make progress. Meanwhile, the UK government has unveiled its own approach to digital IDs.
UK Driving ID Pilot Set for Late 2025
Today, a fresh announcement on gov.uk revealed plans for a new app intended to store government documents, including driving licenses.
From the announcement:
UK residents will soon have the choice to utilize a digital version of their driver’s license from their smartphones, simplifying the process of verifying their age for age-restricted purchases both online and offline, as well as establishing their right to drive.
The mobile driver’s license will be one of the initial digital documents included in a GOV.UK Wallet, which is set to launch later this year, enabling users to verify their age through their phones in retail locations or online, as stated today by Science Secretary Peter Kyle.
The introduction of driving IDs appears to be set for a pilot phase to begin sometime in late 2025.
The complete range of upcoming digitized government documents is expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2027. By that time, “all government services will be required to provide a digital option alongside traditional paper or card credentials.”
Regrettably, the announcement did not specify whether the new app would integrate with Apple Wallet, despite being available on both iOS and Android platforms.
We can only hope that the digital IDs offered by the UK’s upcoming app will be compatible with Wallet as well. However, there’s currently no confirmation of this possibility.
