The screen recording feature on iOS offers an excellent way to quickly share screencasts of your iPhone screen. I frequently use it for tutorials or to clarify my points in the simplest manner possible. As mentioned in the latest episode of iOS Decoded, a forthcoming iOS update will enhance the built-in screen recording tool with three new features that will boost its functionality.
The iOS screen recording tool primarily serves two functions. The first is to record your iPhone’s screen, saving the footage directly to the Photos app. The second function enables live streaming of your screen.
By long-pressing the Screen Recording button in the Control Center, users can access additional options, such as enabling the microphone and setting a broadcast destination for compatible third-party applications like Zoom and Instagram.
Future iOS updates will introduce several exciting new features to screen recording.
Record audio with stereo microphone
Currently, audio captured during screen recording is recorded in mono through the iPhone’s built-in microphone. However, in an upcoming update, users will be able to select multiple microphones for a stereo recording experience.
HDR support for screen recording
As it stands, screen recordings are limited to SDR format. If you attempt to record while viewing HDR content, the screen dims and the output appears in SDR. A future iOS update will enable users to capture and save HDR content through the Screen Recording utility.
Display a live camera overlay using picture-in-picture UI
One of the most significant updates coming to iOS screen recording is the option to display a live camera overlay while recording the screen. This feature will utilize a picture-in-picture interface, similar to what you find during a SharePlay session.
The image above illustrates the new camera option located next to the microphone option in the upcoming Screen Recording interface. This Camera button will allow users to capture footage from the onboard camera while recording the screen.
DMN’s Perspective
While these upcoming enhancements may not be of massive importance to the general public, they are certainly valued additions for frequent users of screen recording. All three features, particularly the video overlay, will enhance the overall utility. What are your thoughts?
