As soon as AirTags were released, I jumped at the chance to purchase eight of them—one for each of my five bags, my keys, a videography rig, and my bicycle. I’ve also found ways to share some of these with friends while traveling, and with the arrival of iOS 18.2, that option just got even better.
I’ve admitted before that I have a bit of a bag obsession, so naturally, the first thing I did was to place an AirTag in each of my primary bags, where they stay almost all the time.
This setup ensures that regardless of which primary bag I take, I’ll have tracking security.
For bags I use less often, I simply borrow an AirTag to temporarily secure the one I’m carrying for the day.
Additionally, I’ve shared one or two AirTags with my partner or friends when we travel together, allowing me to keep tabs on their bags alongside my own. Beyond the obvious benefit of tracking down lost luggage, I appreciate the peace of mind I get from confirming via the Find My app that all our checked bags are safely loaded onto the plane.
In the past, only I could see the locations of the tags within my app, but the AirTag sharing feature in iOS 18.2 has made collaborative tracking easier. I can now share access to the tags in my companions’ bags with them, so they can track their own belongings too.
I also share the AirTags in my bags with them for added security. In the unfortunate event that someone steals both my phone and my carry-on bag—where I keep my other Apple devices—my travel partner would still be able to locate my items using their own phone.
The Share Item Location feature is a major upgrade for AirTags while traveling with family or friends, ensuring that everyone involved can keep an eye on all the bags.
