Apple’s versatile AirTag, unveiled nearly four years ago, has seen a variety of new software features added for its users, yet the hardware itself has remained unchanged. However, fresh rumors suggest that an upgraded AirTag 2 may be on the horizon – here’s what we know thus far.
Current Rumors Surrounding AirTag 2
For those who are not aware, AirTag is a compact device designed for tracking personal items such as keys, backpacks, luggage, and even vehicles. It utilizes Apple’s Find My network, which transmits the location of the device to its owner through other nearby Apple devices, eliminating the need for an internet connection.
So, what’s the scoop on the anticipated AirTag 2? Various sources indicate that Apple has been in the development phase for the second iteration of its tracking device, aiming for a release later this year.
A report from Bloomberg last year detailed anticipated hardware features for AirTag 2. According to insiders, one of Apple’s primary objectives is to enhance the range of the Precision Finding capability. It is likely that the tech giant will incorporate the latest Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip used in the most recent iPhone and Apple Watch models.
As it stands, the current AirTag supports Precision Finding with an operational range of 10 to 15 meters, enabled by Apple’s Ultra Wideband “U1” chip. However, the cutting-edge UWB chip introduced alongside the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9 boasts an improved range of up to 60 meters, making it easier to locate devices from farther away.
Additional reports suggest that Apple is also focused on implementing enhanced anti-stalking features. Some individuals have discovered methods to modify AirTags to disable their internal speakers, and Apple aims to prohibit such alterations.
Sadly, there are currently no indications of any modifications to the AirTag’s design. While the existing version is compact, it may not be the best fit for items like wallets. There are third-party trackers that are nearly as thin as a card, but they lack Precision Finding, which is a unique feature of AirTag.
Regarding the release timeline, leaker Kosutami recently suggested that AirTag 2 could debut in “May or June,” which means we might see the new device unveiled during WWDC 2025.
