WhatsApp Begins Rolling Out Voice Message Transcripts to All Users

Over a year ago, WhatsApp initiated trials for a new capability to convert audio messages into text. Initially exclusive to beta testers, this feature is now available to all users, allowing them to access voice message transcripts on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp now offers voice message transcription

This functionality enables the application to recognize spoken words in voice messages and transform them into readable text, allowing users to comprehend message content without having to listen to the audio—a handy option in scenarios where playback isn’t feasible. Meta states that all transcriptions are performed directly on the device after the audio message has been downloaded.

“Sending a voice message enhances connections with friends and family, providing a personal touch. Hearing your loved ones’ voices when you’re apart is truly special. However, there are times when you might be busy, in a noisy environment, or faced with an extended voice message that you can’t pause to listen to,” the company mentioned in a recent blog entry.

Currently, it is important to note that the feature supports a limited selection of languages. Voice message transcripts on WhatsApp are available in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. Meta indicates that this feature will be rolled out globally and should be accessible to all users in the “coming weeks.”

In contrast, Apple introduced a comparable feature for iMessage with the launch of iOS 17 last year, capable of transcribing audio in multiple languages.

WhatsApp is free to download for iPhone and Mac users from the App Store. Ensure you have the latest app version installed to access the newest features.
