WhatsApp, the widely used messaging application from Meta, has been developing numerous new features recently. Concurrently, the platform is preparing to execute an update that will discontinue support for certain older iPhone models.
WhatsApp to cease functioning on older iPhones
As reported by WABetaInfo, the most recent beta of WhatsApp for iPhone includes a notification for users of some older iPhone models. Specifically, an upcoming update scheduled for release in May 2025 will discontinue support for any operating systems older than iOS 15.1. Currently, WhatsApp functions on iOS 12 and above.
“Update to the latest iOS version to continue using WhatsApp. Support for this version of iOS will end after May 5, 2025. Please navigate to Settings > General, and then select Software Update to install the most recent iOS version,” states the alert.
This essentially indicates that WhatsApp will stop working on the following iPhones:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
Currently, WhatsApp does not have a dedicated iPad app, aside from a beta version accessible to a limited number of users via TestFlight. Consequently, the update next year will also withdraw support for the first generation iPad Air, as well as iPad mini 2 and 3. The beta version for iPad also requires at least iPadOS 12 or later.
Typically, developers abandon support for older iOS versions to concentrate on the latest releases with advanced technologies. Additionally, Apple has stated that only 9% of all iPhones are running on a version older than iOS 16.
If you own a newer iPhone or iPad that is still operating on outdated software, be sure to update it to continue using WhatsApp. However, if you possess any of the devices listed above, you may need to purchase a new phone.
WhatsApp is available for free on the App Store.
