It’s wise to avoid purchasing a new MacBook Air just before a newer model launches, right? Generally, that’s correct, but there are two notable exceptions. At the moment, two exceptional MacBook Air models are available for purchase that offer fantastic value.
M1 or Higher
The first option is the longest-standing MacBook Air still on sale, the M1 MacBook Air, currently priced at $649 (down from $699) at Walmart. If you’re considering a MacBook Air older than this model, ensure the price is significantly lower than $649, as those versions still rely on Intel chips rather than Apple silicon, resulting in inferior performance and capabilities.
Despite not being the latest technology, the M1 MacBook Air available at Walmart is your most budget-friendly entry into the world of Apple laptops.
M2 if Base Model
If your budget allows, the M2 MacBook Air is definitely worth a look at its current sale price of $799 (down from $999). This model showcases the latest MacBook Air design with MagSafe charging, an appealing blackish-blue Midnight color option, and, most importantly, double the RAM. Apple increased the base RAM from 8GB to 16GB last fall, likely to better accommodate upcoming Apple Intelligence features. We are particularly fond of Apple Intelligence.
Although Apple lists the M2 MacBook Air for $999, we advise purchasing only if you can secure the $200 discount.
M3? Wait for M4
For those not in a rush, here are some reasons to hold off:
- If you’re interested in the performance differences between the M2 and M3 models, it’s best to wait for the M4. The performance specifications are already known since the M4 has been available for a while.
- If you’re looking to upgrade your storage or RAM beyond the base 256GB and 16GB, waiting is wise. Since you’re already investing in Apple upgrades, budget constraints shouldn’t be an issue. Hold out for M4 configuration options.
- If you’re aiming for a 15-inch MacBook Air, definitely wait. Apple currently only offers the 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip, and it does not discount its products simply because new hardware is on the way.
In summary, if you’re on a budget, now is a great time to upgrade with compelling deals available. However, if you’re seeking the most recent model with enhanced specifications or a larger screen, it’s best to wait for the M4 MacBook Air, which is just around the corner.
