Will the iPhone 17 Lineup Feature Higher Refresh Rate Displays?

Once again, we find ourselves amidst a wave of speculation. Recent reports indicate that all models of the iPhone 17 will incorporate ProMotion technology, which Apple uses for displays featuring a higher refresh rate. While this possibility does appear strong, it’s best not to get overly optimistic just yet – here’s why.

Exploring the iPhone 17 and Higher Refresh Rate Display Rumors

Renowned display analyst Ross Young mentioned last September that every model of the iPhone 17 would feature ProMotion, a technology currently reserved for the Pro versions. Earlier today, a leaker known as Digital Chat Station, who has previously been accurate regarding Apple speculation, confirmed reports that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will include LTPO displays with a variable refresh rate.

Since the iPhone 13 Pro, each Pro model has been equipped with an LTPO display that can automatically adjust the refresh rate, reaching up to 120Hz for extremely smooth animations. In contrast, non-Pro models have been limited to a consistent 60Hz refresh rate.

The latest rumors have led many to believe that the non-Pro iPhone 17 models will also feature 120Hz displays equipped with ProMotion. However, I personally doubt the accuracy of this. As suggested by its name, “ProMotion” is categorized as a Pro feature by Apple. The devices that have been available with ProMotion thus far include the iPad Pro, iPhone Pro, and MacBook Pro.

While it’s true that Apple occasionally incorporates features from Pro devices into their lower-cost options, this isn’t a guarantee – particularly when a feature carries the “Pro” designation.

If I were to speculate, I would suggest that Apple could quite possibly implement higher refresh rate displays in the iPhone 17 and 17 Air, though I don’t believe they would be 120Hz. Instead, they are likely to employ 90Hz panels, providing a smoother experience compared to the 60Hz displays without quite matching the ProMotion experience. They might even create an entirely new marketing name, such as “Liquid Motion.”

Recently, an anonymous informant shared with the Upgrade podcast that Apple has been considering 90Hz displays for a range of products, including the iPad Air, Studio Display, and even the iMac. Thus, it seems reasonable to conclude that this same technology could make its way to non-Pro iPhones as well.
