Will Trump Distribute Stimulus Checks in 2025? Find Out the Latest Update

  • The proposal for a $5,000 stimulus check derived from DOGE savings has been mentioned, but reliance on it should be cautious.
  • Many Republican legislators are skeptical about any stimulus check stemming from DOGE funding.

President Donald Trump raised the prospect of a stimulus check last month, but will it come to fruition?

This past February, after Elon Musk highlighted the significant “savings” identified by the Department of Government Efficiency, the idea of a $5,000 DOGE stimulus check began to circulate, contingent on the department achieving its $2 trillion savings target.

“We are contemplating distributing 20% of the DOGE savings to American citizens and allocating 20% towards debt repayment,” Trump announced during the Saudi-sponsored FII PRIORITY Summit in Miami Beach last month.

Since then, Trump has remained relatively quiet on the issue. Analysts and even committed Republicans indicate that Americans shouldn’t rely on additional checks.

Are stimulus checks expected in 2025?

The chances of receiving a check appear to be quite slim, and even devoted supporters of Trump and Musk express skepticism about any checks being issued to Americans in 2025.

If checks were to be issued, it would ultimately be Congress that decides whether U.S. taxpayers receive the $5,000 stimulus checks. Currently, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson’s primary focus is on reducing the national debt.

“From a political perspective, that would certainly benefit us, as everyone would receive a check,” Johnson stated to the audience at the 2025 Conservative Political Action Conference last month. “However, considering our fundamental principles, fiscal responsibility remains at the core of our conservative values. We are facing a $36 trillion federal debt and a significant deficit that needs addressing. It’s essential to reduce our reliance on credit,” he remarked.

What inspired the DOGE stimulus check concept?

The idea was not initiated by Musk or Trump, but rather by “Anti-woke” investor James Fishback, CEO and co-founder of Azoria Partners, who proposed it on X on February 14.

Fishback mentioned Musk in his post and urged the billionaire to consider a $5,000 check for American citizens.

“American taxpayers are entitled to a ‘DOGE Dividend’: 20% of the savings from DOGE should be returned to hardworking Americans as a tax refund check. After all, it was their money initially,” Fishback tweeted.

“@ElonMusk, let’s make this happen! This is how we restore trust in our government,” he added.

What would the amount of a DOGE dividend check be?

Crunching the numbers, 20% of DOGE’s $2 trillion savings goal amounts to $400 billion. If stimulus checks were distributed to every American aged 18 and older—258.3 million according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 Census—it would yield just over $1,500 for each individual.

To achieve $5,000 per American over the age of 18, it would require roughly $1.3 trillion.

The Government Accountability Office reported in 2022 that the three rounds of Economic Impact Payments distributed during the COVID-19 pandemic reached around 165 million Americans. Using these figures, the $400 billion spread across those recipients would result in nearly $2,400 for each person.

What were the amounts of the 2020 stimulus checks?

In 2020, Trump endorsed a $2 trillion bipartisan stimulus package that included checks for individuals who had filed taxes in the previous two years, received veteran benefits, or claimed Social Security, alongside funding for small business loans, grants, and increased weekly unemployment payments to combat the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

To provide context, the combined total of the two stimulus checks issued in 2020 and the one in 2021 amounted to approximately $931 billion in relief payments, as reported by the Government Accountability Office in 2022.

Here’s a breakdown of the amounts distributed in each stimulus check and the recipients:

  • The 1st stimulus payment in March/April 2020 offered up to $1,200 per eligible adult and $500 for each qualifying dependent.
  • The 2nd stimulus payment in December 2020 provided up to $600 per eligible person (adult, child, or dependent).
  • The 3rd stimulus payment issued in March/April 2021 granted up to $1,400 per eligible person (adult, child, or dependent).
