The Burger King tweet issue is yet another example of advertising gone wrong. The tweet that was specially put up on International Women’s Day draws harsh criticism from social media fans.
The initial Burger King tweet read, “women belong in the kitchen.” The tweet was not received well by its audience. Several brands and companies this year have used multiple social media platforms to express their support and gratitude towards women. Many organizations also took to promoting their female employees to honor the day. However, the tweet from Burger King gave out a completely opposite message to what it perhaps intended to send out.
In a later tweet, the UK’s Burger King page put up another clarification tweet saying that women belong in the kitchen only “if they want to, of course.” The further went on to say that the initial tweet was a way to reach out to the audience about how the restaurant industry was becoming a male-dominated sector. The latter Burger King tweet also mentioned that only a minority of 20% are female chefs in the industry. The fast-food giant mentioned that they were simply proposing a way to alter the current situation.
Burger King Tweets About Female Culinary Scholarship
In the latter tweet, Burger King mentioned that they were initiating a scholarship program that would help female employees at the company to pursue their dreams of being a culinary expert.
Despite the clarification, the company continued to draw harsh criticisms. Many have termed the tweets misogynistic in nature. Another user has condemned not only the first Burger King tweet but also the second one saying that the company was wrong to use a controversial and sensitive statement as bait to attract an audience. They say, “using a sexist comment as bait isn’t cool.”
