It is being announced that Worldcoin will now be paying its Orb Operators- who were previously rewarded for scanning the eyes of individuals- with a native Worldcoin token- as it will now be phasing out the USDC as early as next month. According to an announcement made on the 22nd of October, the company stated that Orb operators- who had been tasked with scanning people’s irises in exchange for WLD tokens- would not be paid in USDC anymore. In fact, the change will affect most jurisdictions.
Worldcoin Will Be Paying Orb Operators In WLD Tokens
Worldcoin further mentioned that this move to pay the orb operators in just WLD tokens was part of a massive transitional phase that followed the official launch of the project on the 24th of July. On the 10th of October, the Worldcoin Foundation took off on its pilot program in order to grant a few select operators payments made in WLD tokens. In its blog post, the company noted that the tokens were not currently available to companies or people living in the country, as well as a few other restricted territories. According to data retrieved from the Dune Analytics dashboard, one could understand that the supply of the token had grown quite exponentially from 100 million to 134 million.
As it turns out, out of the roughly 134 million Worldcoin tokens that have been issued currently, around 100 million were distributed as loans made out to market makers, although the remaining 34 million were given out to Orb Operators and new users as free user grants. According to the company, around five market-making entities have received the 100 million WLD loans, which were about to expire on the 24th of October 2023. However, the company stated that it would be ending the expiration date of the loans to the 15th of December, with a reduced amount of around 75 million WLD.
