In a blog post, the Worldcoin Foundation said that parts of the software that powers their iris-scanning Orbs are now publicly available as open-source. The statement states that the Orb software’s key components are available on GitHub under a dual MIT/Apache 2.0 license. The recently released hardware is “complementary” to the new open-source components.

What Are The Security Concerns Regarding Worldcoin’s Decision?

Included in the release is code for the Orb that is essential for taking pictures and safely uploading them to the product’s app. Together with verified privacy promises, Worldcoin claimed that its publicly accessible software and iris recognition repositories represent “significant progress” toward establishing transparency for the Orb’s image processing. Apart from disclosing additional software components of the notorious metallic, eye-scanning Orb, Worldcoin also unveiled a new privacy feature named “Personal Custody.”

With the help of this new functionality, users can now take control of the data they offer Worldcoin by signing a data package with their own private key and encrypting it with a public key before transferring it to their mobile device.

This implies that users will “always remain in control of their data,” according to the developer, adding that only the individual is able to decode this biometric data. Worldcoin stated: There are no unencrypted copies of the encrypted data anywhere once it is transferred from the Orb to the user’s World App. The feature might lessen the frequency with which users have to visit an Orb to confirm their World ID, according to the developer.
