A recent report from The Wall Street Journal reveals that Apple is developing two new foldable devices slated for 2026 and beyond, along with insights into the anticipated ultra-slim iPhone 17 model.
Details on iPhone 17 Air
The Wall Street Journal has confirmed several key aspects of the iPhone 17 Air, describing it as a strategy to stimulate growth after a period of minor upgrades. The following points summarize the details:
Starting next year, Apple aims to launch an iPhone that is slimmer than the current models, which have an approximately 8-millimeter thickness. This new version will be priced lower than the Pro models, featuring a simpler camera setup to cut costs.
Initially, there were expectations that the iPhone 17 Air would be one of Apple’s priciest releases, possibly exceeding the price of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, The Wall Street Journal now suggests it will be more affordable than the Pro models.
With the iPhone 16 Pro starting at $999, the iPhone 17 Air could potentially be priced similarly to the iPhone 16 Plus, around the $900 mark.
As noted by The Wall Street Journal, the iPhone 17 Air is set to “provide an option” for consumers desiring a sleeker phone without minding some trade-offs. Apple seems to be investing significantly in making the ultra-thin design visually appealing.
Upcoming Foldable Devices
In addition, we can expect two new foldable devices: a foldable iPhone, and a larger device intended for use as a laptop. The larger device is anticipated to feature a 19-inch display when fully opened, aligning with Bloomberg‘s reporting from earlier today. Originally, this device was expected to debut first, but it seems the foldable iPhone is now the top priority.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the foldable iPhone would “unfold to a display size larger than that of an iPhone 16 Pro Max,” estimating at least a 7-inch screen. For reference, the iPhone 16 Pro Max sports a 6.9-inch display.
Apple had been exploring displays placed on the exterior of the device when folded, but has shifted preference to an inward fold, similar to existing products. Though in development for some time, Apple has encountered challenges with the hinge and display cover, leading to delays.
Executives at Apple are advocating for a 2026 launch for the foldable iPhone, although more time might be necessary to fine-tune the product.
